DO TORONTO POLICE RESPOND TO ALARMS?
Effective January 1st, 2016 Toronto Police will no longer be required to attend burglar alarm activations unless there is verified criminal activity or a valid threat.
Why the new policy?
The majority of alarm activations responded to by Toronto Police (over 23,000 per year) have been identified as false (98%). There is also a $130.00 charge for response to false alarms and a 4 false alarm per year policy prior to suspension of an alarm system. Improving use of police resources is the reason for this policy.

How to verify a real alarm?
The TPS has defined verified response as: The requirement of validation that criminal activity is occurring/has taken place OR there is imminent threat to personal safety PRIOR to requesting a police response.
A burglar alarm may be verified using one or more of the following methods:
- An eyewitness (i.e. private security or person at scene).
- Audio device;
- Video device;
- Multiple zone activations
